In the same region where young Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai was targeted for speaking out about a girl’s right to go to school in Pakistan, her teacher Mariam Khalique is now pressing the issue.
“Many girls are prevented from going to school because of poverty and conflict. In [the city of] Mingora, however, the most common reasons for girls not attending classes are cultural. People fear that females will become too independent if they are educated,” Khalique says.
