When we talk about women in leadership, we often mean women in America and Europe. And yet some of the latest trends in women’s leadership internationally and in emerging markets may tell a more significant story. 11% of CEOs in the largest 250 Indian companies are female and in Brazil they make up 12% in the largest companies. In the US and UK it is a mere 3-5%.

It’s a result of more opportunities (thanks to the cultural shift that’s occurring) and the overt ambition these women possess.

“When I decided to be a mother I didn’t decide to stop working or leave my career. I just decided to be a mother in addition. I had my family’s support and my own belief in myself,” says Lucia Arduin, a Brazilian corporate lawyer.

The western world should take note that these women are just as much a part of the transformation.

Fed up with drug and crime gangs in their community, more than 100 Mexican women in the town of Xaltianguis pledged to use whatever means necessary to defend it. The women partnered with the self-defense group Union of Peoples and Organizations of Guerrero State over the past four days. Twelve women in nine groups will be trained to use firearms to patrol the town during the daytime. They have about 80 firearms that are rotated among members. “Women are brave, and we are capable of defending our town,” says member and mother of two Silvia Hipolito.

“I’m trying to celebrate the feminine side, and I look around and it’s all guys,” he said. Soon enough, Mr. McDonald hit upon a way to address that imbalance. Grace, a bar and restaurant that he hopes to open in Midtown East by the end of this month, will have a cocktail program created entirely by female mixologists.

"Women’s voices should not only be heard because they are the victims of the war. Their active participation in peace efforts is essential, because they are the most effective peace builders. As men take up arms, women hold communities together in times of war."

Wadjda and the Saudi women fighting oppression from within (Guardian)

In January, the Saudi monarchy announced that women would for the first time be appointed to the Shura council (the country’s closest thing to a parliament) and soon be given the vote in municipal elections. Last year, Saudi female athletes took part in the Olympics for the first time. Earlier this year, the kingdom lifted a ban on women working on supermarket checkouts, in lingerie stores and on cosmetics counters. Then, last month, it was announced that women could ride bikes – albeit clothed head-to-toe, accompanied by a male guardian, in restricted areas and for recreation only.
Responding to the bike shift, Wadjda’s director, Haifaa al-Mansour, has said: “We should be happy that changes like this are taking place. I know they seem like they are small and they don’t mean much, but it shows that attitudes towards women are changing, and women are getting more liberties, even if it is very slowly. There is still a long, long way to go, but hopefully things like this pave the way for bigger changes.”

"For women, it’s the fear of triggering the strongest form of gender bias against women—maternal wall. And for men, there’s fear of triggering a stigma on the grounds they’re too feminine."
